SCOOP!

Wish you had a crystal ball for what's going to be hot this Christmas? Here’s what our sources are telling us.

These are the hot toy trends according to Toys ‘R Us: Interactive music (karaoke and the like), pink colors; exercise related toys; Internet connected toys; and transformer/robot toys. More info.

Collectibles, which used to be adults-only territory, are now being sought by younger and younger buyers. This trend is towards getting everything in one toy “family.” You can encourage this kind of sale at your store by offering reductions for buying “the full set,” or with promotions pointing out “the latest collectibles.” Details , with a list of what they predict will be next on the hot collectibles list.

What's New?

In case there was any question about the popularity of “The Family Guy”, it went into syndication last month and shot straight to the top - beating out the likes of CSI and Law and Order. I guess people aren’t tired of Stewie yet!

Battle lines already being drawn for summer 2008. Just when you were getting ready for a tasty turkey, Hollywood has already set the premiere dates for a number of (hoped for) blockbusters next year, including Mama Mia, Get Smart, Indiana Jones and Transformers 2. No surprise a lot of upcoming releases will be sequels or based on TV series - they continue to be the best guarantee of a new movie’s success.

Speaking of which…Terminator will be trilogized, again. If it worked three times in the present, why not do it again, three times in the future? Vin Diesel is reportedly playing the lead in Terminator 4, with McG rumored as the director - as the war between the robots and the humans plays out. More info.

“I tried to buy doughnuts but my shopping cart said ‘NO!’” You knew it had to happen sooner-or-later: a shopping cart that’s a nag. Every time you put an item deemed “unhealthy” in your cart, it reads the bar code for excessive fat, sugar, and salt. Then it tells you to put it back. Or something like that. The “intelligent shopping trolley” will debut in the UK at the Institute for Grocery Distribution. More info.

New products

And they aren’t ours, either.  Our public service feature returns with the new products you’ve been waiting for.

Ice skate faster with a heater in your blades. Here’s a new way for young hockey players to get an “edge.” The Thermablade has a small heater that melts the ice and lets hockey players skate faster, turn tighter, and move more quickly. Do you sell sports equipment? Personally, I’m waiting for the GPS basketball that goes through the hoop every time I shoot it. See the technology and a spiffy promotional video

Call me on my smell phone, silly!  Sounds like a joke - and will be the subject of many, but Sony has a new cellphone that comes in 11 diferent scents, including “apple pie.”  Scents are guaranteed to last for 3 months, and scent strips are replaceable.  More info.

Business Booster

Helping customers helps sales.
Here’s a Help page that you can share with them. There are so many toys that use batteries, and there’s a big choice in types of batteries, too. Competing brands advertise on TV. But what’s really the best battery for each kind of toy? Help your customers choose! Below is a link to a Web page that explains how batteries work, and how to choose the best one for each device. Have a handout like this available for your customers, and they’ll know they’re getting something from you that they don’t get from anyone else in your market. See the info.

That’s all for this issue. Our in-basket is still overflowing with hot skinny… so watch for our next issue.
